Lagos Government Limits Tenancy Fees to 10%, Introduces Monthly Rent Payments

The Lagos State Government has promised to enforce the rule that tenancy agreement fees should not be more than 10%. Landlords and agents are warned not to charge more than this.

At a 2025 press briefing in Alausa, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, Special Adviser on Housing, spoke out against agents who charge too much money. She asked people to report anyone asking for more than the allowed fee.

She said many of these bad agents are not registered and work outside official real estate groups.

The government has talked with estate agent groups, who said they do not support these bad agents and will help stop them. Because the government can’t watch every rental deal, they need people to help report problems.

Housing Commissioner Moruf Akinderu-Fatai also said the government plans to allow tenants to pay rent monthly or every three months instead of paying once a year. This will make it easier for people to afford their rent.

With these steps, Lagos wants to make housing fairer and easier for everyone.
