Lagos Now Fifth Among Top Wealthy Cities in Africa

Lagos, the vibrant heart of Nigeria, has achieved a remarkable status as the fifth wealthiest city in Africa, according to the latest Africa Wealth Report 2024 by Henley & Partners. 

This bustling metropolis, which is also the most populous city on the continent, boasts a significant number of high-net-worth individuals, tallying up to 4,200 millionaires. 

Despite a slight drop from the fourth position last year, where it boasted 5,400 millionaires, Lagos remains a pivotal economic powerhouse in the region. The city’s dynamic blend of cultures and robust economic activities make it a central hub for both local and international businesses, setting the stage for its prestigious ranking among Africa’s wealthiest cities.

Economic dynamics of Lagos

Lagos is not just a city. it’s the economic lifeline of Nigeria. Hosting over half of the country’s millionaires, it’s clear why this city is so influential. The presence of major African multinational corporations like Dangote Group and Zenith Bank underscores Lagos’s role as an indispensable economic center. These companies, along with others in sectors such as oil and gas, finance, and transport, contribute to the city’s wealth and help sustain its economic momentum.

The comparative wealth in Africa

While Lagos shines brightly, it is part of a broader tapestry of affluent cities across the continent. The top spots are occupied by Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, Cairo in Egypt, and Nairobi in Kenya. Johannesburg leads with an impressive count of 12,300 millionaires, followed by Cape Town and Cairo. 

Nairobi, just slightly ahead of Lagos, houses 4,400 millionaires. This ranking not only highlights the economic disparities within the continent but also showcases the regions where wealth is accumulating rapidly.

Future projections and growth

The future looks promising for Africa’s millionaires, with an expected increase of 65% by 2030. This growth is anticipated to be driven by sectors like fintech, eco-tourism, and software development, among others.
