Lagos Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge Opening: What Commuters Need to Know

The Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge in Lagos State will open to the public this week, following its commissioning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during an official two-day visit to Lagos on Wednesday and Thursday, April 9–10, 2026.

The announcement was made on Monday, April 6, 2026, by Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

What Is the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge?

The Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge is a major road infrastructure project in Lagos State designed to ease traffic congestion across the Ojota, Maryland, Mende, Opebi, and Allen corridors, some of the busiest commuter routes connecting Lagos residential areas to the Ikeja Central Business District (CBD).

By creating a direct road link between Opebi in Ikeja and Mende in Maryland, the bridge significantly reduces pressure on Allen Avenue, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and Ikorodu Road, three of Lagos’s most congested arterial routes.

Key facts:

  • Location: Connects Opebi (Ikeja) to Mende (Maryland), linking to Ojota
  • Purpose: Direct route between Ikeja CBD and Ojota, previously only accessible via indirect roads
  • Construction manager: Julius Berger Nigeria
  • Foundation depth: 20-metre excavation required due to difficult terrain
  • Construction start date: January 26, 2022

Why Was the Bridge Built?

Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, explained that before the bridge, there was no direct road connection between Ikeja and Ojota and commuters were forced onto longer, heavily congested alternative routes.

The bridge was originally conceived over 20 years ago during Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos Governor. It was revived and flagged off in January 2022 by Governor Sanwo-Olu as part of the Traffic Management and Transportation Pillar of his administration’s THEMES Developmental Agenda and the State Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP).

How Will the Bridge Reduce Traffic in Lagos?

The Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge is expected to:

  • Cut travel time for commuters moving between Ojota, Maryland, Mende, Opebi, and Ikeja
  • Decongest Ikorodu Road, one of Lagos’s most traffic-prone corridors
  • Reduce pressure on Allen Avenue and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way
  • Improve access between residential neighbourhoods and the Ikeja business district

What Other Projects Are Being Commissioned During Tinubu’s Lagos Visit?

President Tinubu’s two-day visit to his home state will also see the commissioning of several other key Lagos State Government projects, including:

  • Lagos State Geographic Information Service (LAGIS) building
  • Lagos Multi-Agency Building, Alausa
  • Lagos Fresh Food Hub, Abijo, Ajah
  • Tolu Schools Complex, Ajegunle
  • Maracana Stadium (featuring 19 mini-football pitches)

Traffic Management During the Presidential Visit

Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) will deploy over 500 personnel across the metropolis to manage traffic flow during the presidential visit. Dedicated security, logistics, and traffic coordination plans are in place to minimise disruption for Lagos commuters.
