Lagos Ranks 14th Worldwide, 2nd in Africa for Nightlife
A recent survey by Time Out Magazine places Lagos among the globe’s top nightlife capitals. Out of more than 300 cities evaluated, Lagos secured 14th place overall and second on the African continent, just behind Cape Town.
High Resident Approval
According to the report, 79 percent of Lagosians gave the city’s after‑dark scene a thumbs‑up. That level of local enthusiasm positions Lagos ahead of other African cities; Cairo came in 15th and Marrakech in 19th.
From Lounges to Underground Raves
Time Out highlighted how Lagos’s nightlife has grown beyond upscale bars and hotel clubs. The city’s vibrant underground scene, featuring hotspots like SweatItOutLagos and Our Group Therapy, draws partygoers keen on inclusive, home‑grown music and dance events.
Security Boosts Confidence
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the ranking reflects improved security measures under Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu. “It shows our security architecture is working,” Omotoso noted, pointing to rising tourist numbers and successful recent festivals.
Planning Year‑Round Events
To capitalise on its nightlife fame, the administration plans to formalise major entertainment events, especially during the last quarter’s “Detty December” celebrations, into an annual tourism calendar. Lagos will also become the first African city to host the Extreme Illusion (EI) Water Race Championship.
