Lawmaker Ikwechegh Granted N500,000 Bail After Alleged Assault on Driver
Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South, has been granted bail by a Kuje Magistrate Court.
The bail amount set was N500,000 Ikwechegh faced charges for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver named Stephen Abuwatseya outside his residence in Abuja.
The incident, which was captured in a widely circulated video on social media, shows Ikwechegh allegedly threatening the driver and boasting about his ability to make the driver “disappear without a trace.” This led to public outcry.
Deji Adeyanju, the lawyer representing the Bolt driver, confirmed the arraignment and highlighted the serious nature of the allegations. In response to the incident, the House of Representatives has referred Ikwechegh to its Ethics Committee, emphasising that a simple expression of remorse is insufficient.
