Meet Sandie Okoro the First Female Chancellor of Birmingham University

Sandie Okoro, a Nigerian-British lawyer has been named the first female Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. This achievement marks a milestone not only for Okoro but also for the institution, which has been shaping leaders since its inception in 1900.

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, praised Okoro’s appointment, it as a testament to the global impact and excellence of Nigerians in various sectors. “Sandie Okoro’s new role as Chancellor is a proud moment for Nigeria. She has consistently fought against injustice and promoted equality, and her leadership at Birmingham University is expected to further these ideals,” Obi said.

In addition to celebrating Okoro’s achievement, Obi also acknowledged Maureen Okam Achebe, another distinguished Nigerian, who recently received the Brigham and Women’s Hospital 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Award for her contributions to clinical care, research, education, and community service.

Okoro, a seasoned lawyer and advocate for equal rights, expressed her honor and enthusiasm about her new role. “I am truly honored and delighted to be appointed Chancellor,” she said. “This role offers me a chance to give back to the university that has greatly influenced my family and me.”

The University of Birmingham has been a part of Okoro’s life for decades, having been the educational home to three generations of her family—her mother, herself, and her son. Her deep ties to the university underscore her commitment to further enhancing its legacy of inclusivity and educational excellence.

As Okoro steps into her role, she carries with her a profound connection to the university and a commitment to uphold its values of impactful research and creating opportunities for all students, especially those from minority backgrounds.
