Meta is Building an Undersea Cable to Connect the World
Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has announced a massive project to build an undersea cable that will connect five continents.
This cable will stretch over 50,000 kilometers (31,000 miles), linking the United States, South Africa, India, Brazil, and other regions.
Why is Meta doing this?
The internet depends on undersea cables to move data across the world. These cables allow people to send messages, stream videos, and use apps like Facebook and WhatsApp.
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), even more data is needed. Meta wants to make sure its platforms, including AI-powered services, have strong and fast connections.
In the past, telecom companies controlled undersea cables. Now, big tech companies like Meta and Google are building their own. This gives them more control over speed, reliability, and costs.
What makes this cable special?
Meta’s new cable, called Project Waterworth, is its third undersea cable as a sole owner. It is named after Gary Waterworth, a late Meta employee who worked on submarine networks.
Unlike some existing cables, Waterworth is designed to avoid geopolitical risks. For example, it won’t pass through areas like the South China Sea or the Red Sea, which have been sites of tension and conflicts.
Why does the internet need more cables?
Every year, undersea cables get damaged sometimes by accidents like fishing equipment or ship anchors, and sometimes on purpose. If one cable stops working, others are needed to keep the internet running smoothly.
Also, AI is increasing the need for fast and reliable internet. AI models require huge amounts of data, and Meta wants to make sure its AI services work without delays.
Only a few companies in the world can build these cables. Meta is working with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a French company known for laying undersea cables.
What this means for the future
By investing billions in this cable, Meta is securing its position as a leader in digital communication. With more people using the internet every day and AI technology growing fast, strong connections across continents will be more important than ever.
This project is another step toward a more connected world, powered by tech giants like Meta.
