Millers Explain Why Rice Prices Are Falling in Nigeria
Have you noticed that the price of rice at your local market is getting a bit cheaper? Well, there’s a good reason for that. Thanks to the Nigeria-Niger border being opened again, rice is becoming more affordable all over Nigeria. Jonathan Joshua, a big name in the rice milling business said, when the border was closed, it was tough to get enough rice across to make all the rice we eat.
But now that it’s open, the rice mills are back in business, and they’re getting all the rice they need from our neighbors. Jonathan Joshua says, “Now that we can get rice easily from other countries, many mills are starting up again. This means more rice in the shops and lower prices for everyone.”
What’s next for rice prices in Nigeria
It looks like rice might get even cheaper in the next few months. Joshua mentioned, “As soon as the farmers start harvesting their rice, expect prices to drop even more.” That’s great, especially since everything else seems to be getting more expensive these days. While other prices have been going up, rice prices have fallen by 19%!
So, what does this mean for your household? More rice at better prices! With rice becoming cheaper, your grocery budget can stretch a little further. And for those who make rice, like Joshua and his fellow millers, it’s good news too because they can keep their mills running and keep supplying all of us with our favorite rice dishes.
So next time you’re out shopping and you see that rice is a bit cheaper, remember it’s because of the border reopening and all the hard work of our local rice millers. Looks like there are good times ahead for rice lovers in Nigeria!
