National Assembly Postpones Plenary Resumption to March 5
Nigeria’s National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary sessions that was earlier scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Lawmakers in both chambers will now return for plenary on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
The change was announced in an official notice issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana. The notice explained that the adjustment was made to allow Senate and House committees conclude ongoing budget defence sessions linked to the 2026 budget process.
With the revised calendar, the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to reconvene on Thursday, March 5, 2026, by 11:00 a.m.
The postponement means the legislative chambers will remain on break for an extra period, while committee work continues behind the scenes.
This week, the focus remains on budget scrutiny, including engagements with ministries, departments, and agencies as lawmakers examine spending plans, request clarifications, and push for adjustments before the final stages of budget consideration.
For Nigerians tracking legislative timelines, the delay also means plenary-driven activities such as debates, motions, and the progression of certain bills will likely be pushed into early March.
In practical terms, committee sessions remain the main space where decisions and pressure points around the budget are being shaped until lawmakers resume full sitting.
The National Assembly leadership also appealed for understanding, noting that the schedule change was necessary to complete the budget defence work and reduce disruptions when plenary fully returns.
