Niger Workers Commence on Endless Strike Amidst Economic Hardships
Niger workers have embarked on an indefinite strike, signaling a significant escalation in their ongoing dispute with the state government. The strike, which commenced this morning, was initiated following a directive from the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
This move comes as a direct response to the state government’s failure to meet the demands of the workers, plunging the region into a state of uncertainty and unrest.
The genesis of the strike
The decision to down tools indefinitely was not taken lightly. It was the result of prolonged negotiations that hit a dead end. The state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Idrees Lafene, along with his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Ibrahim Gana, had earlier directed civil servants in the state to commence the strike.
They cited the state government’s failure to continue negotiations on critical issues affecting the welfare of the workers and the smooth running of the state as the primary reason for this drastic action.
The government’s attempt to avert the strike
In an attempt to avert the looming strike, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, announced that a meeting with the labour leaders was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. He emphasized that the Mohammed Bago administration enjoyed a cordial relationship with organized labour and was committed to addressing the contentious issues in the best interest of the state.
“The government of Niger State today invited organized labour to a meeting, hoping to receive its cooperation,” Usman stated, assuring the public of the administration’s labour-friendly stance and openness to dialogue.
The outcome of the meeting and the strike’s progress
However, despite the government’s efforts, the meeting failed to materialize. A reliable source within the organized labour union, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the meeting did not take place, leading to the continuation of the strike as planned. The leadership of the union has since urged all branches to mobilize their members for total compliance, indicating a widespread commitment to the strike action.
The government’s response and the public’s plight
The government’s insensitivity to the plight of the ordinary Nigerian has been highlighted by the strike, with one source noting the grave danger it poses to all if the only voice of the voiceless remains indifferent. Meanwhile, attempts to reach the Information Officer of the SSG, Tanko Lawal, for comments on the failed meeting and the government’s next steps have been unsuccessful, as his phone line failed to connect.
As the strike unfolds, the situation room remains open, with continuous updates promised to keep the public informed. The strike action by Niger workers is a stark reminder of the ongoing economic hardships faced by many in the region and the urgent need for constructive dialogue and resolution.
