Nigeria at 64: 10 Moments from President Tinubu’s National Broadcast

Today, October 1st, 2024, Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Anniversary with a heartfelt address from President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu shared his vision for the country’s future in his national broadcast, highlighting key achievements and outlining plans to tackle ongoing challenges. Here are ten standout moments from his speech:

Economic reforms and hope for the future

President Tinubu began by acknowledging the economic struggles many Nigerians face, such as high living costs and unemployment. He reassured the nation that the government is implementing reforms to improve the economy. “Your voices are heard,” he said. “We are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Progress in security

Tackling terrorism and banditry remains a top priority. Tinubu announced that over 300 leaders from Boko Haram and various bandit groups have been neutralized. “Our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry,” he stated, emphasizing that peace is being restored in many communities.

Returning home: Support for displaced persons

Many Nigerians displaced by conflict are now able to return to their homes. The President highlighted that thousands have already come back, thanks to the efforts of security agencies committed to ending conflicts swiftly. “Our people are returning home, and we are dedicated to making this process as smooth as possible.”

Responding to natural disasters

Due to the recent flooding, President Tinubu introduced a Disaster Relief Fund to aid those affected. Additionally, he announced integrity tests for dams to prevent future disasters. “The federal government stands with our people in their times of trouble,” he assured.

Attracting foreign investments

Nigeria has seen a surge in foreign investments, attracting over $30 billion in the past year alone. Tinubu credited these figures to the government’s economic reforms. “Our country has attracted more than $30 billion in foreign direct investments,” he proudly announced.

Boosting agriculture and food security

To enhance food production and reduce costs, the President emphasized the importance of mechanized farming. He also revealed the establishment of a tractor assembly plant, which is expected to significantly increase food output. “We aim to see a leap in food production and a decrease in food costs,” Tinubu explained.

Energy transition for cheaper transport

Addressing transportation costs, Tinubu confirmed the expansion of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) usage in mass transit systems. This move is part of a broader energy transition program aimed at making public transportation more affordable. “Our energy transition program is on course to provide cheaper public transportation,” he stated.

Empowering the youth

Recognizing the potential of Nigeria’s young population, President Tinubu announced a National Youth Conference and several initiatives focused on youth empowerment. Programs like the 3 Million Technical Talents initiative and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund were highlighted as key steps towards involving young people in nation-building. “This conference will empower our young people to actively participate in building our nation,” he declared.

Fiscal responsibility and debt reduction

The administration has made significant strides in managing the country’s finances. Nigeria’s debt service ratio has been reduced from 97% to 68%, and substantial inherited debts have been paid off. Additionally, foreign reserves remain stable, showcasing responsible fiscal management. “We have successfully reduced our debt service ratio and maintained stable foreign reserves,” Tinubu affirmed.

Unity and resilience

Concluding his speech, President Tinubu called on Nigerians to stay hopeful and united despite the challenges they face. He praised the nation’s resilience and tenacity, assuring that together, they can overcome any obstacle. “We are Nigerians—resilient and tenacious. We always prevail and rise above our circumstances,” he encouraged.
