Nigeria Immigration Updates System to Make Passport Tracking Easier for Applicants
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a significant update to its passport tracking system amid widespread public dissatisfaction over prolonged delays in passport collection.
Thecaption “READYY FOR COLLECTION” status is now included in the system’s improved feature. It provides applicants with more precise information on the progress of their passport application.

The NIS noted this in a post on its verified X (previously Twitter) account. It mentioned that the new status was implemented because it noticed hundreds of passports had already been produced but had not yet been picked up. This has led to an increase in questions and grievances from applicants.
With the new update, Nigerians and diaspora residents can now distinguish between passports still being produced and those ready for collection.
Public Backlash and Social Media Pressure
The update comes after a heated public backlash on social media, especially on X. Frustrated applicants shared proof of their months-long delays.
One of them is investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, who posted about his passport renewal application. According to him, his application had been pending for more than six months, despite completing payment and biometric capture in mid-2025.
In response to the criticism, the NIS explained that Soyombo’s passport was ready for delivery and had already been produced, but it had not yet been picked up or sent. It highlights the need for a more accurate tracking status.
The Service clarified that missing paperwork, security checks, or technical problems can occasionally cause delays.
