Nigeria, Kenya, others May Face UK Visa Restrictions

Reform UK says it will stop visa applications from countries such as Nigeria if the party wins the next general election and those countries continue to demand reparations from the United Kingdom.

The party’s home affairs spokesman, Zia Yusuf, said countries calling for compensation over slavery were ignoring what he described as Britain’s role and sacrifices in ending the slave trade.

According to him, many of the countries now demanding reparations have also benefited from millions of UK visas and billions of pounds in foreign aid over the past two decades.

Countries mentioned by the party include Nigeria, Jamaica, Kenya, Haiti, Guyana, Barbados and The Bahamas.

Reform UK said it would move to stop issuing visas to nationals of any country that formally pursues reparations claims against Britain.

The proposal comes at a time when global calls for reparations over the transatlantic slave trade are growing stronger. The United Nations has backed discussions on the issue, describing the forced displacement of Africans as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

The African Union has also continued to push for talks on reparatory justice, including formal apologies, restitution and financial compensation from former colonial powers like the UK.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has rejected the idea, criticising the United Nations and opposing any payment for historical wrongs.

The British government, however, has kept its long-standing position on the issue. A Foreign Office spokesperson said the UK recognises the cruelty and injustice of slavery, but will not pay reparations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also ruled out both an apology and compensation, saying the focus should remain on future relations.

Reform UK also said it plans to cut foreign aid spending to £1 billion, which would amount to a 90 per cent reduction, as part of its wider policy agenda ahead of the election.
