Nigeria Launches Oil Licensing Bid for 24 Blocks

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has officially started the commercial bid round for 24 oil blocks in the country. This pivotal event marks the first such initiative since the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021.

The bid round, which kicked off today in Lagos, was initially launched back in May. During the event, NUPRC Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe, who is also an engineer, highlighted the significance of this round. He stated that the successful bidders would be required to promptly begin exploration activities on the awarded blocks.

Komolafe further elaborated that the licensing and subsequent award of these oil blocks aim to enhance Nigeria’s oil and gas reserves, increase the country’s production capacity, and maximize the overall value of its petroleum assets. This move is seen as a strategic step to bolster the nation’s energy sector under the new regulatory framework established by the PIA 2021.
