Nigeria Ranks 3rd Strongest Military in Africa

Nigeria has claimed the third spot among African nations in the 2025 Global Military Strength Index, released this year by Global Firepower (GFP). Compiled annually, the GFP ranking evaluates more than 60 metrics, including troop numbers, equipment inventories, defence budgets, logistical capacity and geographic factors, to measure each country’s overall military capability.

On the continent, Egypt is in 19th place globally, followed by Algeria in 26th place. Nigeria sits next among Africa’s top forces, ranking 31st worldwide.

South Africa rounds out the top four African militaries at 40th globally. Below is the full list of African countries featured in the 2025 Global Firepower Index, along with their world rankings:
