Nigerian Box Office Hits Record High in December 2024 with Over N2.8 Billion in Sales
In December 2024, Nigerian movies had their best month ever, earning more than N2.8 billion and selling over 537,000 tickets.
This is the most money made in one month since December 2019, showing that Nigerian movies and theatres are becoming more popular.
Top Grossing Films
The movie “Everybody Loves Jenifa” was a big part of this success. By its third weekend, it had made N1.035 billion and added N250 million in just the last weekend of December, making it one of the top-earning Nigerian movies.
Other movies also did well. The family movie “Mufasa” made N93.8 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to N267 million.
“Alakada: Bad & Boujee” made N70.3 million, with a total of N205.3 million. Movies from other countries, like “Sonic 3” and “Moana 2” from Disney, also brought in a lot of money.
Significant Sale Days
One big day for ticket sales was Boxing Day, with 47,672 tickets sold. It was the best day for ticket sales since the pandemic and the third-best in Nigerian box office history.
This shows that many people in Nigeria like to go to the movies during the holiday season.
The average price for a movie ticket was N5,220, showing that people are willing to spend money on movies. The government has also been supporting the movie industry.
Earlier in the year, they started a N5 billion fund to help movie and creative projects. This fund has already given N1.5 billion to four Nigerian movie producers.
These great results suggest that Nigeria’s movie industry could have its best year yet, possibly making more than N10 billion.
This would be a big increase from previous years and would strengthen Nigeria’s place as a major movie market in Africa.
The Nigerian movie industry is part of the country’s larger creative sector, which employs 4.2 million people and could add 2.7 million more jobs in the next five years.
Experts think this sector could be worth $15 billion by 2025, with movies playing a key role.
