Nigerian Care Worker Jailed in UK For Kissing a Patient
A former hospital worker, Adewale Kudabo, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a York court after admitting to sexually assaulting a patient under his care.
Judge Alex Menary ruled that Kudabo violated the trust placed in him as a medical professional by kissing the vulnerable patient without her consent.
Kudabo pleaded guilty in April to two counts of sexual assault. On June 10, the judge ordered him to serve six months in prison before being eligible for release on licence.
Court documents reveal that the victim, already in pain, suffered severe anxiety and distress, experiencing flashbacks of the incidents.
The assaults occurred at York Hospital, managed by the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Prosecutor Henry Fernandez explained that Kudabo was responsible for assisting the patient with a bed bath.
After completing the task, he leaned in and kissed her on the lips. Despite her attempt to move away, her injuries prevented her from fully avoiding the unwanted contact. A few days later, Kudabo again offered to bathe the patient and attempted another kiss.
In response, the NHS foundation issued a statement apologising to the victim and confirming that Kudabo left his position shortly after the incidents were reported. During the court hearing, Fernandez emphasised the patient’s confusion and emotional distress following the events.
Defence lawyer Jerry Sodipe pointed out Kudabo’s lack of a prior criminal record and expressed his client’s remorse.
He stated that Kudabo, who moved to the UK from Nigeria for work, acted out of misguided sympathy for the patient’s pain but admitted his behaviour was “inappropriate and unacceptable.” Following his conviction, Kudabo also lost his job at the hospital.
