Nigerian Senator Confronts Harry, Meghan with their Colonial Past
Prince Harry and his partner Meghan Markle are already getting it in the neck visiting their former colony—for no fault of theirs.
Many Nigerians are not yet aware of their purpose of visiting Nigeria. But the globalist personae of the couple has bought them a lot of capital. Nobody bothers about their mission.
Their reception, however, is stirring memories—bad ones.
Former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani said the protocol of their reception in Kaduna pissed him off.
It displayed “obsequiousness and colonial mentality, and, to him, it felt “utterly disgusting.”
Sani wears his heart on his sleeve. So expect him to spare no words.
In a post on his X handle on Saturday, the lawmaker made his take clearer.
“I like Harry and Meghan because of their rebellious attitude and I appreciate their visit to my country,” he said in the tweet.
“But the obsequiousness and colonial mentality displayed by the protocol of their visit is utterly disgusting.”
The reception from the Kaduna Airport included ferrying them to the state house in a blacked out bus. Travellers arriving or departing about that time had to wait for the royals to pass.
The couple also visited the military hospital where wounded soldiers fighting insurgency and banditry are getting treatments.
Harry has also told Nigerian students ‘its okay to fail.” The advice might have followed the mass failure in the last UTME which has been trending.
In some photo-ops at the state house, the couple also appeared in native attire, with all the beads and local ornaments.
Anyone of these could have hurt Sani’s sensibilities, though not as much as the airport ritual.
“I hope when the elder brother comes, our officials will not carry him on their shoulders,” he tweeted.
Harry and Meghan became the first non-conformist royals the most enduring world’s monarchy will ever produce.
Their father King of England Charles also visited Nigeria shortly after his coronation.
