Nigerian Youths Play Second Fiddle as Advisers and Assistants While Senegal’s Diomaye Faye Makes History – Omoyele Sowore

In a disheartening comparison with Senegal’s recent political triumph, Nigerian youths seem to be stuck in a rut, content with playing second fiddle as mere assistants to governors or senators. This observation was made by Omoyele Sowore, the #RevolutionNow convener and a persistent voice in Nigerian politics, following the inauguration of 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the President of Senegal.

Sowore’s critique of Nigerian youth is sharp. He argues that while youthfulness is an asset, it alone doesn’t guarantee effective leadership. He points to the disappointing performance of some young leaders in Nigeria as a testament to this. The former Kogi governor’s tenure is cited as a glaring example of youth failing to bring about positive change, highlighting that being young doesn’t always equate to having progressive ideas.

The activist stresses the need for political engagement and the creation of new, untainted political parties. He admires Faye’s persistence in Senegal, which eventually led to his victory, and suggests this as a model for Nigerian youth. However, Sowore is quick to temper any premature celebration of Faye’s success, warning that time will tell if he truly embodies the change he represents.

Sowore is particularly critical of the Not Too Young To Run law in Nigeria, questioning its effectiveness in bringing young leaders to the forefront of the presidency. He challenges Nigerian youth to do more than just tag along with the old guard, urging them to be ambitious, character-driven, and visionary.

He concludes with a stark comparison between the need for alert, capable leaders and the health issues faced by older leaders like former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Tinubu. Sowore’s message is clear: Nigerian youths need to step up, move beyond subordinate roles, and take charge to shape the nation’s future, rather than basking in the reflected glory of others’ achievements.
