NiMet Warns of Rain, Thunderstorms for 3 Days From Monday

NiMet’s 3-day weather outlook, released Sunday in Abuja, warns that Nigerians should brace for widespread thundery showers from Monday to Wednesday.

In the northern states, early-morning thunderstorms, or without rain, are expected to strike Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna on Monday.

By afternoon and evening, storms accompanied by rainfall will spread across Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.

In the North-Central region, NiMet predicts sunny skies with cloud patches at dawn. Still, isolated thunderstorms are likely over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi later in the day.

Across the same three-day period, moderate afternoon rains will fall on those central states, interrupting otherwise bright conditions.

Southern Nigeria should expect a cloudy start to each day, with light morning showers along the coast, from Lagos through Rivers and Bayelsa. Heavier rain bands are moving inland over Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta States by afternoon. These conditions will continue through Wednesday, offering little relief from the wet weather

NiMet also cautions that strong gusts may precede the downpours, creating additional hazards. Motorists are advised to avoid driving in heavy rain, while residents should secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances, and steer clear of tall trees to guard against falling branches.

Airline operators must obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning, and all Nigerians are urged to stay updated via the agency’s website at www.nimet.gov.ng
