NIN, CAC Numbers to Serve as Tax IDs from 2026 – FIRS
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission will automatically function as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians under a new tax identification framework taking effect from 2026.
Similarly, the registration number issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) will now serve as the official tax ID for businesses across the country.
The new policy was revealed in a public awareness campaign on the updated tax laws shared by the FIRS on X on Monday.
According to the Service, the unified Tax ID system merges all existing Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier.
“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity,” the FIRS explained.
The agency added that the reform is intended to simplify taxpayer identification, eliminate duplication, block avenues for tax evasion, and promote fairness by ensuring that everyone who earns taxable income is properly captured in the system.
The FIRS also urged Nigerians to ignore misinformation circulating about the policy, stressing that the new framework is designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and trust in the country’s tax administration.
