NIS Starts Easy Passport Renewal Online, First in Canada on Nov. 1, Then in Nigeria in December
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is launching a new system on November 1, 2024, to make renewing passports easier.
This new method will first be available in Canada and will allow Nigerians to apply for passport renewals online, avoiding trips to NIS offices.
The service will be expanded to the UK, USA, and Italy on November 15, and by December 1, it will also be available in Nigeria and other countries around the world.
The NIS announced this news on their X (formerly Twitter) account last Wednesday.
The announcement included a video explaining that this new system is part of the NIS’s effort to improve service and meet international standards. Here’s how it works:
- Create a Profile: You start by registering with your email.
- Check Eligibility: There’s a quick check to make sure your passport can be renewed.
- Verify Identity: You need to provide your National Identification Number (NIN) and current passport number.
- Enter Personal Information: You fill in your details and upload needed documents like your NIN slip, birth certificate, and local government certificate.
- Capture Biometrics: Use your mobile device to capture your fingerprints.
- Review and Pay: Make sure all your information is correct, pay the fee online, and submit your application.
Once your application is processed, your new passport will be sent to the address you provided. Initially, this new system will only be for renewing passports.
Starting November 1, Canadians can download the NIS mobile app from Google Play or the App Store to start using this service. The plan is to make passport renewal easier for Nigerians all over the world.
