Nissan Motor Set to Open Assembling Plant in Ghana as Toyota, Suzuki Indicate Interest

Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer, Nissan Motor is making moves to begin car assembling in Ghana, Bloomberg reports.

The company is reportedly partnering with a Ghanaian car dealership, Japan Motors Trading Company Ltd, to assemble Nissan Navara pickup in Accra, the country’s capital.

The Ghanaian government had set a goal to make the country an automotive hub in the West African sub-region and offered a tax break to automakers as an attraction. It appears the policy is yielding the desired result as global automobile brands are racing to invest in the country.

Reports say other automobile manufacturers including Toyota, Suzuki and Renault SA have also indicated an interest in investing in the country.

Already, the Volkswagen Group in partnership with a local partner manufactures six brands of its vehicles in Ghana. These brands are Tiguan, Teramont, Amarok, Passat, Polo, and Caddy.

Hong Kong truck manufacturer, Sinotruk, also assembles some of its truck brands in Ghana through the company’s local partner, Zonda Tec Ghana Limited.

Earlier this year, the government also banned the importation of cars that are over 10 years old to boost local production and stimulate the interest of potential investors.
