NLC Calls for Strike Starting Dec 1 in States Not Paying the New Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has told workers in states where the new N70,000 minimum wage has not been implemented to start a strike on December 1, 2024.

This decision was made after a meeting in Port Harcourt because some state governments have not followed through on their commitment to increase wages, which is both illegal and unfair to workers facing economic difficulties.

The NLC also spoke out against policies they believe are harmful to ordinary Nigerians. They highlighted that many people are struggling to afford basic needs like food and healthcare, which is causing health problems related to poor nutrition.

The group called for immediate action from the government to improve these conditions by providing better social protections and a livable wage.

Additionally, the NLC expressed concern over political issues in Rivers State, where a legal decision has stopped the state from receiving some federal funds, which could affect the payment of workers there. They described this as an attack on the rights of the people of Rivers State and warned that they would intensify their response if the situation did not improve.

The NLC reaffirmed their commitment to fighting for workers’ rights and said they would continue to use strikes and other methods if needed. They are demanding a Nigeria where workers are respected and their rights protected.
