Obi Cubana Reveals Why He Went All Out for His Mother’s Lavish Funeral
For the first time, Nigerian socialite and billionaire Obinna Oyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana, has shared the personal reasons behind the extravagant funeral he organized for his late mother.
In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwu, Obi Cubana explained that his family had been hoping his mother would break a generational pattern where no one in their family had lived to see their 80th birthday.
Before July 2021, Obi Cubana was relatively unknown outside nightlife circles. However, he became a household name after hosting an elaborate and widely talked-about funeral for his mother, a spectacle that has yet to be matched by any other event in Nigeria.
In the interview, Obi Cubana revealed that he and his siblings had been saving up for their mother’s 80th birthday, planning to celebrate in a grand style.
Sadly, she passed away at the age of 79. Determined to honor her life, the family decided to hold an extraordinary funeral instead.
“In my family, nobody has lived up to 80 years, and I’m saying this for the first time,” Obi Cubana shared. “My father died at 66, my grandmother at 75, and my grandfather at 78.
We were praying for my mother to break that jinx. All my siblings are married and successful, and we had been saving up for a celebration like no other. When she passed at 79, just short of 80, we decided to go all out for her funeral.”
He went on to explain that his mother was a humanitarian who dedicated her life to caring for widows. The family had made it a tradition to celebrate her birthdays in a big way, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Obi Cubana described how his mother eagerly looked forward to reaching 80, but her passing on December 31, 2020, just months shy of that milestone, inspired the family to pool their resources for a fitting farewell.
“She came so close to breaking the jinx at 79 and a half, so we brought everything together to celebrate her life,” he said. “She almost made it, and that’s why we went all out for the burial.”
