Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu Died

Ondo State has been plunged into mourning following the death of its Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away at the age of 67 after a long battle with leukemia. His demise on Wednesday has left a notable void in the state’s political landscape.

Background story

Governor Akeredolu, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), had been a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal and political spheres. Born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, he pursued a law degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and his career was marked by significant milestones, including serving as the Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997 to 1999.

Despite facing corruption allegations in 2009, which were later dismissed, he continued to make substantial contributions to the legal field and politics.

Akeredolu’s journey as Ondo’s governor began with his election in November 2016, following a controversial primary. He was re-elected in October 2020, embarking on a second term in February 2021. His governance was characterized by a focus on development and addressing state issues.

How Akeredolu battled health challenges amidst governance

The governor’s health challenges began to overshadow his administrative duties in 2023. He had been absent from Ondo since June 2023, receiving treatment in Ibadan and later in Germany. Despite these challenges, he remained committed to his duties, overseeing state affairs remotely. His determination to prioritize his health and recovery was a testament to his dedication to his role and the people of Ondo State.

However, his absence and subsequent inability to seek treatment abroad due to the severity of his condition led to political tensions within the state. Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa assumed the role of acting governor, resulting in divisions within the state’s leadership.

Akeredolu’s death is a loss for many

Governor Akeredolu’s passing is not just the loss of a political leader but also the end of an era for Ondo State. His commitment to legal excellence and political service, as evidenced by his various roles and achievements, including being named the Grand Patron of the NDLEA in 2022, will be remembered by many.

His absence has created a leadership vacuum in Ondo, challenging the state’s democratic journey. As the state and its people come to terms with this loss, they look forward to continuing the vision Akeredolu had for Ondo, under the acting governorship of Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The state, while mourning, also reflects on the contributions and legacy of Rotimi Akeredolu, a figure who played a pivotal role in its history.
