Over 162 Million Visits to Porn and Betting Sites by Nigerians in June -StatiSense
A recent study by StatiSense, a global data and business intelligence platform, has disclosed that Nigerians logged over 162 million visits to pornographic and betting websites in June 2024.
This information was part of a broader analysis detailing the top ten websites frequented by Nigerians via mobile devices last month, with a considerable volume of traffic directed towards adult content and gambling portals.
StatiSense shared these findings on its official X page, noting that among the most visited sites were search engines, social media platforms, and betting sites.
Notably, adult sites Xvideos and Xnxx were among the top, drawing 80.18 million visits combined, and securing the second and sixth positions respectively.
The data further revealed that Nigerian mobile users accessed sports-related websites 176.83 million times, with sports betting sites Sportybet and Bet9ja, drawing 83.1 million visits, placing them third and fourth respectively in the ranking.
Despite the heavy patronage of adult and betting sites, major social platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram did not appear in StatiSense’s top ten list for June 2024. Google and Facebook, however, were prominently listed.
Here is the complete list of the top ten sites by visitor count:
- Google — 382.68 million visits
- Xvideos — 52.02 million visits
- Sportybet — 46.44 million visits
- Bet9Ja — 36.7 million visits
- Facebook — 30.86 million visits
- Xnxx — 28.16 million visits
- YouTube — 26.86 million visits
- Goal — 18.43 million visits
- Flashscore — 16.67 million visits
- Livescore — 16.06 million visits
Social Media Reaction
Social media users have expressed varied reactions to these statistics. One user, @LagosCinematographer, remarked on the uniqueness of Nigeria in having adult and betting sites prominently listed:
“I have checked USA, many African and European countries, only Nigeria has porn and betting sites on their list and even appeared more than once 😀. Inside this hardship, konji won finish una 😀.”
Another, @ayinlaoluwamayoma, pointed out, “Omooo, and to know more than 50% of the times Google was visited was to search for porn sites… This nation is gone 💔.”
@Maverick also commented, suggesting deeper societal issues at play: “This is a negative stride especially to Nigerians.
However, we seem to underrate how a good and working government affects our life personal choices. The extreme rate of unemployment, hunger, and starvation has made people resort to degenerative means of coping mechanisms.”
