Presidency Explains Why Nigerians Must Have the NIMC Multipurpose ID Card

According to the presidency, every Nigerian should get the new National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) multipurpose ID card because it is important. 

This card, which will soon be available to the public, is designed to make it easier for Nigerians to access government services, financial support, and job opportunities. Here’s why it is so important.

Access to government services

The NIMC multipurpose ID card will serve as a key that opens doors to several government interventions. The Presidency explained that the card will simplify the process of accessing government services, from social welfare programs to healthcare. 

By linking Nigerians to various government services, the card is expected to improve transparency and trust between the government and citizens.

Improved access to loans and financial inclusion

One of the standout features of the new ID card is its ability to help Nigerians access loans more easily. With the card, Nigerians can build a verified credit score based on their financial history, which will be recognized by financial institutions, including banks and government bodies. 

This will make it easier for people to access loans, even if they are new to banking. The goal is to include more Nigerians in the formal financial system, providing everyone with a chance to participate in the country’s economy.

Driving financial inclusion

The Presidency emphasized that the NIMC ID card will help bring over 100 million Nigerians into the banking system. For many people in Nigeria, access to banking has been difficult due to a lack of identification and a formal credit history. 

With the multipurpose ID card, people who were previously excluded from the financial system will now have a way to join. The card will also allow people to request a credit or debit card, making banking more accessible.

Job applications and verifiable identity

Another significant benefit of the NIMC multipurpose ID card is its role in the job market. The card will soon be required when applying for both government and private sector jobs. 

This will help employers verify the identity of job seekers, ensuring that they are legitimate citizens without any fraudulent records. This is important for creating trust in the hiring process and making sure that the right people are getting the right jobs.

How to get the card

Getting the NIMC multipurpose ID card will be simple. Nigerians who already have their National Identification Number (NIN) will be able to request the card through various channels. Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, explained that the process will be easy and convenient. 

Nigerians can visit any bank across the country to apply for the card. This decentralized process means that people do not need to travel far to get the card, as there will be many locations where they can apply. The price of the card will be uniform across all banks, ensuring fairness.

How it is a step towards modernization

The NIMC multipurpose ID card will also be linked to several government services and even digital payment systems. It will be compatible with the eNaira, Nigeria’s digital currency, and will meet international security standards. 

This card will not just be a tool for identification but also a way to interact with various government services and financial systems in a secure and efficient manner.
