Protests: Why are Northerners Displaying Russian Flags?

Since the #EndBadGovernance protests began across Nigeria on August 1, some protesters in parts of the North have been seen waving Russian flags.

This action has made people curious and worried, leading to many interpretations and explanations.

Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, offers insight into this unusual choice of symbol during the demonstrations.

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has however distanced itself from the protests, clarifying that the actions of the demonstrators do not reflect any official Russian government policy or position.

Reasons for displaying the Russian flag:

1. To Get the Attention of the Federal Government

Yakasai notes that the protesters are using the Russian flag as a strategy to draw attention from the federal government to their plight and concerns.

By picking a flag that is known around the world and linked with strength, the protesters want to send a strong message.

They hope that using such a noticeable and bold symbol will see their problems and push the government to act quickly.

2. Awareness of International Dynamics

He mentions that the average Northerner is informed and has heard through international broadcasts about events in other countries like Mali, Burkina, and Niger.

This knowledge might influence their decision to use a significant international symbol like the Russian flag.

3. Fear of External Influence

Yakasai expresses a concern that this symbolic act could attract attention from external forces who might take advantage of the situation, indicating the protesters are playing a risky but potentially impactful strategy.
