Research Reveals That People Age Faster at 44 and 60

New research suggests that people tend to age faster at the ages of 44 and 60. If you’ve been feeling older suddenly, noticing more wrinkles or aches, there might be a reason for this.

A study from Stanford University in 2024, published in Nature Aging, found that ageing doesn’t happen slowly over time but rather in quick bursts at these specific ages. The study looked at over 11,000 molecules in the body and discovered that 81% of them change a lot around the ages of 44 and 60.

The research talks about biological age, which is different from chronological age. Biological age is about changes in proteins, molecules, and how genes work as we get older, while chronological age is just the number of birthdays we’ve celebrated.

This rapid ageing could explain why certain diseases, like heart disease, start to become more common after people turn 40 and 60. The study found that at ages 44 and 60, levels of a protein that can cause heart problems went up. Also, the body’s ability to make certain fats that help lower bad cholesterol went down.

Additionally, people’s blood sugar levels peaked during their 40s and 60s, which could link these age bursts to an increased risk of diabetes.

Both men and women showed these changes, suggesting that they aren’t caused only by the hormones that are different between sexes.

However, the study didn’t look at all life stages, like puberty or very old age, so it doesn’t give a full picture of how we age throughout our lives. Despite this, the findings help us understand more about how and when our bodies change as we age.
