Rotimi Amaechi in Heated Confrontation with Police at National Assembly
A tense confrontation unfolded at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, had a heated exchange with police officers during a protest.
Amaechi, who joined the demonstrators at the National Assembly, was seen confronting security personnel, challenging their authority amid the ongoing protests.
The former governor participated in the demonstration to demand the real-time electronic transmission of election results, a pivotal issue following the Senate’s rejection of this proposal during the current electoral reform discussions. This stance has sparked widespread public outcry and has become a focal point for electoral integrity.
The protest, dubbed ‘Occupy the National Assembly’, attracted a large group of Nigerian youths who gathered in Abuja, voicing their concerns over what they termed a setback to credible elections and the transparency of the democratic process.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also lent his support to the protest, joining demonstrators a day earlier to stand in solidarity for electoral reforms.
The protest has added pressure on lawmakers to revisit their decision on the electronic transmission of election results, as the ongoing debate about electoral integrity continues to dominate the national conversation.
