Sanwo-Olu at 60: 5 Key Projects That Have Changed Lagos

As Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu turns 60, it’s a good time to look at how his work has helped change Lagos for the better. From better roads to smarter flood control and improved health centres, five major projects show his efforts to make life easier for millions of people.

Each of these projects uses modern technology and was planned with the needs of communities in mind. They have helped solve old problems, created new chances for growth, and made everyday life less stressful for many people.

Let’s take a closer look at these five important projects and how they’ve helped Lagos grow and improve.

1. Citywide Road & Bridge Renewal: 61 Roads and 5 Bridges Delivered

Between May 2024 and May 2025 alone, Sanwo-Olu’s administration commissioned 61 new or rehabilitated roads covering 56.52 km, plus five new bridges across the state .

This sweep of projects, from the Estate Gate pedestrian bridge in Alapere-Ketu to the Abiola-Onijemo Link Road in Ifako-Ijaiye, has unclogged major routes and opened up once-isolated communities.

Commuters now speak of “smooth, predictable” journeys to work and school, while local businesses report higher foot traffic thanks to better access.

2. Demurin-Agidi Road Upgrade: Connectivity & Flood Resilience

On March 7, 2025, Governor Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the rehabilitated Demurin-Agidi Road (and adjacent Church Street) in Agboyi-Ketu and Kosofe LGAs. Beyond fresh asphalt, the scheme added advanced drainage channels that eliminate the perennial flooding which once cut off homes and markets.

Traders along the route say footfall has more than doubled, and motorists bound for Mile 12 and Owode Onirin now bypass gridlock, trimming their travel times by up to 30 minutes each way.

3. Oshodi–Abule-Egba BRT Corridor: Halving Commute Times

Launched in August 2020 under Sanwo-Olu’s watch, the 13.65 km Oshodi–Abule-Egba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lane serves some 60,000 riders daily.

By dedicating a pair of lanes to high-capacity buses, the corridor cut journey times from over an hour to under 30 minutes.

Commuters celebrate reliable schedules, reduced fares and enhanced safety, many now reclaim up to two hours per day for work or family.

4. Agege Primary Health Centre Overhaul: Quality Care Nearby

On February 1, 2025, Lagos inaugurated the newly renovated Iloro Primary Health Centre in Agege, a flagship of its community-health drive. Upgrades include modern delivery suites, expanded laboratories and comfortable waiting areas.

Pregnant women and young families say they no longer trek across town for basic services, and local health officials report early upticks in antenatal visits and immunisation rates.

5. Adeniji Adele Underbridge Pumping Station: Smart Flood Control

In April 2025, the state launched a stormwater pumping station at the Adeniji Adele Underbridge, targeting chronic flooding in Aroloya, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, and neighbouring streets.

Equipped with high-capacity pumps and linked to a wider drainage regeneration plan, the facility now clears what used to be knee-deep floodwaters within hours.

Residents and business owners say flood-related disruptions have all but disappeared, safeguarding homes and storefronts at peak rainy-season flows.
