Should Domestic Workers Get a N70,000 Minimum Wage?

The Senate called for domestic workers to be included in the proposed N70,000 National Minimum Wage scheme. This move aims to ensure that domestic workers, who play essential roles in many households, are not left out of economic improvements

The proposal also suggests setting up a federal agency to handle the registration and monitoring of domestic workers and their employers.

The Senate’s proposal aims to standardise wages across all job sectors, ensuring that domestic workers receive fair compensation.

By suggesting a dedicated federal agency, the Senate is committed to improving employment practices for this often-overlooked group.

The bill, championed by Senator Babangida Hussaini and managed by the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, received strong support at a public hearing

Senator Osita Izunaso highlighted the importance of the proposal: “As we set a minimum wage for the lowest tier of public workers, it’s only fair that domestic workers receive the same consideration.” Despite some concerns about how the bill will be implemented, the overall response was positive.

The National Council for Women’s Society and other stakeholders also supported the bill, pointing out the need to integrate domestic workers into the national wage framework.

This legislative effort reflects a broader national conversation about ensuring fair wages for all workers, signaling a shift towards greater economic justice and inclusivity.
