Should Nigerians Pay for National ID Cards? NIMC Insists

The recent announcement from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) stating that Nigerians will need to pay for the new multipurpose national identity card has sparked a heated debate.

The decision is framed as a necessity due to limited government revenue, but it raises a fundamental question: Should Nigerians really have to pay for a national ID card?

Why do Nigerians have to pay?

NIMC argues that charging for the ID cards will help ensure that only those who truly need them will apply. Dr. Peter Iwegbu, the Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, suggests that this approach will prevent the past mistakes of issuing free cards that many people did not collect.

While there is some logic in wanting to streamline the process, the fundamental issue remains: is it fair to ask citizens to pay for something that is intended to serve as a basic form of identification?

How it can be a burden on Nigerians

For many Nigerians, the idea of paying for a national ID card could be seen as an additional financial burden. In a country where many citizens struggle to make ends meet, adding costs for essential services raises concerns about accessibility.

While NIMC promises to implement programs for less privileged Nigerians, the reality is that not everyone will benefit equally from such initiatives.

One of the biggest challenges with charging for national ID cards is the potential impact on equity. Identity cards are vital for accessing various services, including healthcare, banking, and social benefits.

If only those who can afford to pay have access to these cards, it could deepen existing inequalities. The government should ensure that essential services are accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial situation.

Is having NIN a necessary investment?

Supporters of the new policy might argue that the fees could lead to better management and distribution of the cards.

They believe that by making citizens pay, NIMC can focus on producing cards for those who genuinely need them, potentially improving efficiency. However, this perspective overlooks the broader implications of accessibility and fairness.
