Soft Life and the Hard Fall of Nigeria’s ‘Tech Queen’ Now Facing FBI Charges

By now, many Nigerians know the name Sapphire Egemasi, the 28-year-old “tech queen” who dazzled social media with glimpses of a life many could only dream of.

Her feed was a masterclass in luxury: sun-drenched photos in Greece, fine dining in Paris, yacht views in Croatia, and stays at some of the world’s most exclusive hotels. One minute she was in Italy sipping champagne, the next she was landing in Dubai for what seemed like yet another luxury getaway.

Her followers lapped it up. She was a symbol of the Nigerian tech success story, young, stylish, and free to explore the world. With hashtags like #SoftLife and #TechQueenOnTheMove, she built a brand that suggested tech was her golden ticket.

But in April this year, everything changed.

Sapphire was arrested in the U.S. by the FBI over allegations of wire fraud and identity theft. Prosecutors claim she played a role in building fake U.S. government websites used to steal millions of dollars. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.

Suddenly, the story behind all those beautiful photos is being rewritten.

For now, Sapphire is in federal custody in Kentucky awaiting trial. Her followers are left scrolling back through her posts, wondering what was real — and what wasn’t.

Her story is a sharp reminder of how easy it is to get swept up by the curated lives we see online. Sometimes, the luxury comes at a bigger price than we know.
