Super Eagles, Falcons to Earn More as CAF Profits Surge

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has posted a net profit for the first time in years, amounting to USD 9.48 million for the 2023/24 financial year, which unlocks higher prize payouts that directly benefit Nigeria’s national teams.

At its 47th Ordinary General Assembly in Kinshasa, DR Congo, CAF also reported total revenue of USD 166.42 million, driven by stronger sponsorships, tighter financial controls, and rising global interest in African football.

CAF states that these gains will be reinvested in competitions, infrastructure, and member associations. In practical terms, this translates into larger prize pots across major tournaments.

What this means for Nigeria

The most immediate headline figure for Nigeria is at AFCON: winners now receive USD 7 million, a 40% increase from the previous cycle. Should the Super Eagles lift the trophy at the next edition, the Nigeria Football Federation would bank this bigger purse.

The women’s game is also seeing a meaningful bump. The WAFCON champions’ reward has doubled to USD 1 million.

A title win for the Super Falcons would therefore deliver a significantly larger cheque than in previous tournaments, reflecting CAF’s stated commitment to women’s football and broader development.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has described the turnaround as a “turning point for African football’s financial independence and sustainability.” With 16 commercial partners now on board and the era of deficit spending declared over, the financial outlook is more stable.

Even club competitions are feeling the uplift, with the CAF Champions League winners’ prize climbing by 60% to USD 4 million, an indicator of the wider payout era that national teams can expect to benefit from.

CAF’s return to profit is already showing up in bigger prize money. If the Super Eagles win AFCON, that’s USD 7 million on the table. If the Super Falcons win WAFCON, it’s USD 1 million. For Nigeria’s teams, success on the pitch now carries even stronger financial rewards.
