The African Countries That Have Secured Their Spots for the 2026 World Cup
The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is heating up across Africa, with teams battling for a place in the expanded tournament that will host 48 nations.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) qualifiers, which began in November 2023, will wrap up in November 2025. From the nine automatic tickets available to African countries, only two teams have officially sealed their places, Morocco and Tunisia.
Both North African nations have shown consistent form since the qualifiers began. Morocco, who made history at the 2022 World Cup by reaching the semi-finals, have continued their fine run with dominant performances.
Tunisia, on the other hand, have also maintained their strong reputation in African football, securing qualification with a game to spare.
While seven spots remain up for grabs, several countries are just a step away from booking their place. Egypt currently leads Group A with 20 points, driven by Mohamed Salah’s leadership and their attacking strength.
Senegal, sitting on 18 points in Group B, are also favorites to qualify, thanks to their solid defense and experienced squad.
Benin Republic has been one of the surprise performers in Group C, topping the table with 14 points. Cape Verde, another impressive side, leads Group D with 19 points and could be set for a rare World Cup appearance.
In Group F, Cote d’Ivoire are comfortably in charge with 20 points, showing the same hunger that saw them dominate at the 2023 AFCON.
Algeria, with 19 points in Group G, look well on course to return to the global stage, while Ghana leads Group I with 19 points and will need just one more win to make their qualification certain.
Once the final two rounds of fixtures are played in a fortnight, the picture will be complete. Nine African teams will qualify directly, while one more will represent the continent in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament for a possible tenth slot.
For now, all eyes are on the upcoming games, as Africa prepares to know which nations will proudly fly the continent’s flag in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
