The Igbo Apprenticeship System: How It Makes Billionaires in Africa

The Igbo apprenticeship system is a traditional institution that has become a key part of the social, economic, and political fabric of South-Eastern Nigeria.

It focuses on teaching skills and trades, particularly in specialised handcrafts, commerce, and business, to foster wealth generation and capital accumulation.

This method is very old and is used by the Igbo people, one of the largest groups in Nigeria.

Here’s how it works and why it’s so effective in creating wealth.

What is the Igbo Apprenticeship System?

This system is like a training program where young people, usually teenagers, work with an experienced business owner. The business owner is often a family member or someone very trusted. The young person, called an apprentice, doesn’t just work but learns all about running a business. This includes how to handle money, deal with customers, and make good deals. They learn by doing things in real business situations, not in a classroom.

After learning for about five to seven years, the apprentice gets a big reward. The business owner, who they call ‘Oga’, gives them some money or goods to start their own business. This help is called ‘freedom settlement’. It’s like a push that helps them stand on their own feet and start a successful business.

Why is it so successful?

What makes this system really good is how it builds a community. Instead of competing harshly with each other, people support one another. The business owner helps the apprentice because they know one day, this apprentice might become a business partner or help them in another way.

This system has created many successful business people and billionaires in Nigeria and West Africa. Markets where Igbo traders work are full of energy and business is always booming.

Like all systems, sometimes there are issues. For example, some people might take advantage of the apprentices or not support them enough. But these problems are about the people, not the system itself.

The Igbo Apprenticeship System is a great way to teach business and help people succeed together. It focuses on real experience and building a network of supportive relationships. It’s not just about making money; it’s also about helping the community and keeping strong ties with others.
