Here’s a look at the 10 longest bridges across Africa, showcasing engineering feats and the benefits they bring to millions.

6th October Bridge, Egypt

At 20.5 km, this is the longest bridge in Africa, stretching over the River Nile in Cairo. Completed in 1996 after 27 years of construction by Arab Contractors, it serves as a major route to Cairo International Airport and includes a segment that crosses the Nile twice.

Third Mainland Bridge, Nigeria

Previously the longest until 1996, this bridge spans 11.8 km from Oworonshoki to Lagos Island, integrating major highways. Built in the late 1970s and opened in 1990, it remains a critical piece of Lagos’ transportation network.

Nairobi National Park Super Major Bridge, Kenya

This bridge, completed in 2019, is part of the Nairobi-Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway. It stretches 6.58 km through Nairobi National Park, standing up to 41 meters high in places, blending infrastructure with conservation.

Suez Canal Bridge, Egypt

Also known as the Mubarak Peace Bridge, this 3.9 km bridge connects Asia and Africa. It was completed in 2001, enhancing movement and trade between the continents.

Mozambique Island Bridge, Mozambique

Maputo-Katembe Bridge, Mozambique

Known as the Maputo Bay Bridge, this 3.04 km suspension bridge, completed in 2018, connects the capital, Maputo, with Katembe across the bay.

Chora Super Major Bridge, Kenya

Finished in 2019, this bridge is the second-longest in Kenya and the eighth-longest in Africa, forming an essential part of the Nairobi-Naivasha Railway.

Athi River Super Bridge, Kenya

Armando Emilio Guebuza Bridge, Mozambique

This box-girder bridge, spanning between Sofala and Zambezia provinces, was completed in 2009. Named after a former president, it facilitates road connectivity previously served by ferries and is a toll bridge.
