Things to Know About Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam Flooding Nigeria

The Nigerian government has issued a warning regarding the controlled release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

The release, which will gradually increase to a flow of 1000 cubic meters per second over the following week, is expected due to incoming water from the Garoua River upstream.

Situated in Cameroon’s Northern Province on the Benue River within the Niger basin, the Lagdo Dam has long been a focal point of concern for Nigeria. The dam acts as a gateway for the River Benue into Nigeria, impacting multiple states with its water discharge.

Historically, the dam’s water releases have led to significant flooding, affecting roads, farmlands, and properties across various regions. Notably, last week, a severe flood in Borno State resulted in over 30 fatalities and affected more than a million residents.

Most of Cameroon’s large dams, including Lagdo, primarily serve power generation and irrigation purposes. The region around Lake Lagdo, known for its temperate climate and scenic views, also attracts tourists.

Construction of the Lagdo Dam began in 1977 and concluded in 1982. Initially, plans included the construction of an additional dam in Adamawa State, Nigeria, called the Dasin Hausa dam, intended to manage the overflow from Lagdo.

This dam was projected to be larger and aimed at providing electricity and supporting irrigation in northern Cameroon.

However, the absence of the Dasin Hausa dam has led to ongoing challenges in managing the excess water, particularly affecting the states and communities along the Niger and Benue rivers.

The lake serves various critical functions, providing potable water, and supporting the irrigation of crops like cotton, maize, and sorghum, as well as offering grazing fields and fishing opportunities in the surrounding areas of Garoua.
