Three Confirmed Dead in Ikorodu Building Collapse

Tragedy struck the Otta-Ona area of Ikorodu Local Government in Lagos State as three persons, including a teenage girl, were confirmed dead following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the victims were working on the ground floor of the building when the structure suddenly gave way around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash that drew nearby residents to the scene.

The recovery effort, led by LASEMA and other emergency responders, continued into the early hours of Wednesday.

The body of one male worker was recovered shortly after the collapse, while the bodies of a second adult male and a teenage girl were later pulled from the rubble.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident and disclosed that all three bodies had been handed over to officers from Igbogbo Police Station for further investigation.

“This unfortunate incident claimed the lives of two adult males and one female teenager,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

“We have transferred the bodies to the police for proper documentation and inquiry into the cause of the collapse.”

The exact cause of the structural failure remains unknown, but authorities say an investigation is underway to determine possible negligence or regulatory violations.

Building collapses have become an all-too-frequent occurrence in Lagos, raising ongoing concerns about construction standards, enforcement of building codes, and oversight within the industry.

Meanwhile, officials have called for increased scrutiny of ongoing construction projects across the state to prevent future tragedies.

Residents in the area have been urged to remain cautious around construction sites and to report any suspicious or unsafe developments to the appropriate authorities.
