Timini’s New Film Debuts With ₦106.5m at the Box Office
Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has scored another strong cinema start as his new film, Love and New Notes, opened the weekend with about ₦106.5 million in total earnings.
Box office figures for the February 13–15 weekend show the romantic drama pulled roughly ₦103.9 million on its opening day, then pushed its opening weekend total to about ₦106.5 million.
In a period where several titles are fighting for attention, that kind of start puts the film among the better-performing new releases this year.
What the film is about
Love and New Notes is directed by Kayode Kasum and written by Stephen Okonkwo. The story is set in Nigeria in 1984, and it follows Boma, a character caught between love, tough choices, and the pressure of a changing economy. Currency reforms and financial uncertainty sit in the background, shaping decisions and testing relationships.
The film leans into romance, but it also pushes a clear message: the choices people make under pressure can change their lives for years. That mix of love story and social reality is part of what makes the film feel timely, even with a historical setting.
The Lagos premiere and industry attention
Before the nationwide release, the film premiered in Lagos at a high-profile event hosted by Egbuson. The turnout signaled strong industry interest and helped build momentum ahead of opening weekend.
The premiere drew major names across entertainment, including Don Jazzy, Funke Akindele, Lateef Adedimeji, and Lil Kesh. Several cast and production members were also present, including Odunlade Adekola, Ayoola Akinyoola, Sophie Alakija, Eniola Badmus, Toluwani George, Constance Owoiyomi, Iyiola Elvis, and Tolu Babs Omish.
The night also had a light moment when Sophie Alakija got a surprise birthday shout-out that excited the crowd.
Wide cinema rollout in Nigeria and Ghana
Distribution matters as much as star power, and this film did not come small. Co-produced by FilmOne Studios and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment in collaboration with FilmTribe Media, Love and New Notes secured wide cinema placement across Nigeria and Ghana.
Screenings ran in key locations such as Ikeja City Mall and Silverbird Galleria in Lagos, Jabi Lake Mall and Silverbird Entertainment Centre in Abuja, Galaxy Mall in Kaduna, and also Silverbird Cinemas in Accra plus West Hills Mall in Ghana.
Timini’s box office run is getting harder to ignore
This opening weekend adds to Egbuson’s growing reputation as a reliable cinema draw, especially among younger urban audiences. It also continues a trend from his recent projects.
In 2024, his film Reel Love also directed by Kayode Kasum became a strong commercial success. It opened with ₦40.5 million on its first day, recorded about ₦99.3 million in its opening weekend, and rose to ₦123.2 million in its first week, later crossing ₦200 million within three weeks.
Those numbers helped reset expectations around how quickly a Nollywood title can scale when marketing, cast pull, and cinema placement align.
There is also the bigger picture. In 2023, Egbuson was listed among Nigeria’s top 10 grossing actors, with reports linking him to nearly ₦3 billion in earnings from films where he played lead or major supporting roles. Whether you like him or not, the market keeps responding.
Who is Timini Egbuson
Timini Egbuson blends mainstream appeal with consistent output. He studied Psychology at the University of Lagos, then moved fully into acting. Many viewers first noticed him through the TV series Tinsel, where he built a strong image as a confident screen presence and a familiar romantic lead.
Over time, he has expanded into bigger cinema projects and performances that earned industry respect, including his AMVCA-winning role in Elevator Baby. Outside acting, he has also built a strong personal brand as a producer, host, and influencer, which helps his films travel quickly across youth culture and social media.
A ₦106.5 million opening weekend is not just a win for one actor. It shows that cinema audiences are still willing to show up when the package is right: clear genre, recognisable star, strong marketing, and wide distribution.
