Tinubu Appoints New PTDF Executive Secretary, Renews TCN Managing Director’s Tenure

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). This follows the resignation of Ahmed Galadima Aminu. He also renewed the tenure of Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as Managing Director/CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

What Happened

President Tinubu approved leadership changes in two important federal agencies that oversee Nigeria’s energy sector. The decision affects both petroleum capacity development and national electricity management.

Professor Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu has been appointed to lead PTDF after the voluntary resignation of Ahmed Galadima Aminu, who stepped down to pursue political goals in Adamawa State.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noted that Aliyu is a seasoned academic and administrator known for his solid experience in research and institutional leadership.

According to the Presidential Villa, Onanuga said, “his appointment underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening key institutions in the petroleum sector and advancing capacity development for Nigeria’s energy industry. The President expects him to leverage his wealth of experience to reposition the PTDF for greater impact in human capital development, innovation, and strategic support for the oil and gas sector in line with national priorities.”

At the same time, Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz has been kept on for another term as head of TCN. According to reports, Abdulaziz’s reappointment followed a thorough evaluation of his leadership at TCN. It cites improvements in grid reliability, increased transmission capacity, and progress in upgrading the country’s power infrastructure.

It also pointed to his contributions to strengthening cross-border electricity cooperation within the West African region. This shows a continuation of his leadership at the agency responsible for transmitting electricity across Nigeria’s grid.

Why This Matters

Institutional continuity: Renewing leadership at TCN shows policy stability in the power sector.
Human capital development: PTDF plays an important role in training professionals in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
Energy sector governance: Both agencies are vital to Nigeria’s long-term energy infrastructure and reform goals.
Political transition impact: The resignation at PTDF highlights the overlap of public service and electoral ambitions.
