Tinubu Seeks N9.3tn Addition to 2026 Budget, Raises Proposal to N67.7tn

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve an additional N9.3 trillion in the proposed 2026 budget, raising the total to N67.7 trillion.

The request was presented in a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, as lawmakers resumed from the two-week Eid al-Fitr break.

In the letter, the President said the proposed increase is mainly intended to regularise outstanding legacy capital projects carried over from previous budgets and ensure their completion.

He also explained that part of the extra spending would go towards major transport projects, in line with his administration’s development plans.

Tinubu added that the budget adjustment is also aimed at maintaining macro fiscal stability and reducing pressure on the domestic financial market.

After the letter was read, Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further legislative review.

The National Assembly has not yet passed the 2026 budget, making this latest request a major adjustment to the proposal still under consideration.
