Tinubu to Labour: You’ll Have to Settle for Minimum Wage I Can Afford

President Bola Tinubu has asserted that he would not agree to a minimum wage that is above the financial capability of the Federal Government.

He stated this in Abuja on Wednesday at a dinner to mark the 25th anniversary of unbroken democratic rule in Nigeria.

“The minimum wage is going to be what Nigerians can afford, what you can afford, and what I can afford,” he said. 

The government’s last offer to labour was N62,000, which the workers vehemently rejected and described as “starvation minimum wage.“

This forced the President and his team to further review the new wage upward. According to Tinubu, the federal government will present a new offer soon.

The Organised Labour insists on N250,000 as the new minimum wage. Although state governors have said they can’t even afford to pay the N62,000.

According to them, they might have to borrow to meet up and it would be at the expense of other development projects in their respective states.
