Top 10 African Countries That Use the Least Natural Gas in 2025
Many African countries still don’t use much natural gas in 2025, even though they have a lot of it underground.
This is mostly because they don’t have enough pipelines, factories, or good energy plans. Natural gas is cheaper and cleaner than things like diesel, firewood, or coal, but it’s not being used enough.
Because of this, many people still use charcoal or firewood to cook, which can be bad for their health. Factories also suffer because they can’t get enough cheap energy.
This makes electricity more expensive and less reliable, which affects homes and businesses.
Here are the 10 African countries using the least amount of natural gas in 2025, based on information from Global Firepower:
1. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – 380,000 cubic metres
World rank: 110th
The DRC uses the least natural gas in Africa. Even though it has many natural resources, most of its energy comes from water power (hydropower) and firewood.
2. Niger – 28.9 million cubic metres
World rank: 107th
Niger has almost no gas pipelines or factories. People use diesel, firewood, and solar energy instead.
3. Senegal – 54.6 million cubic metres
World rank: 105th
Senegal found gas under the ocean recently, but it hasn’t started using much of it yet. Projects to use this gas are still being built.
4. Benin – 182.1 million cubic metres
World rank: 100th
Benin gets most of its gas from Nigeria. The country is slowly building its own gas system.
5. Morocco – 243.2 million cubic metres
World rank: 97th
Morocco uses more solar and wind energy. It also buys gas from Algeria, but political problems have made this harder.
6. Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) – 423 million cubic metres
World rank: 92nd
Congo produces gas but sends most of it to other countries. It doesn’t use much of it at home because the local system is not strong.
7. Gabon – 463 million cubic metres
World rank: 90th
Gabon also sells most of its gas to other countries. It still needs to build better gas pipes and factories for local use.
8. Cameroon – 877 million cubic metres
World rank: 85th
Cameroon uses some gas to make electricity. But gas use in homes and for transport is still very low.
9. Mozambique – 1.35 billion cubic metres
World rank: 82nd
Mozambique has lots of gas, but most of it is turned into liquid gas and sent abroad. Local use is still small.
10. Angola – 1.4 billion cubic metres
World rank: 81st
Angola is building more gas infrastructure, but most of its gas still goes to oil production or exports.
