Top 5 African Economies Producing Half of Africa’s GDP

Africa’s total economic output is heavily concentrated in just a few countries. Using International Monetary Fund data, the report says Africa’s combined GDP in 2024 was about $2.8 trillion, and roughly half of that total came from the continent’s five biggest economies, with a combined GDP of about $1.4 trillion.

Africa has a large population and abundant resources, which continue to attract investors and new businesses. While overall growth prospects appear strong, the report notes that the benefits are not evenly distributed across the continent.

Even as African Development Bank Group projections indicate that many African economies are experiencing rapid growth, the IMF-linked figures highlighted here show that a small group still accounts for a major share of the continent’s output.

According to the report, the remaining 48 countries in the sample together also account for about $1.4 trillion, roughly matching the combined size of the top five.

Why the top economy ranks first

The report links the leading economy’s position to a stronger financial base, a relatively active manufacturing sector, and a well-established mining industry.

It also points to the second-ranked economy’s strategic advantage from controlling a major global trade route that generates significant revenue.

The third-ranked economy is described as benefiting from its influence in the petroleum market.

What the report recommends

To sustain growth and strengthen GDP performance across more countries, the report urges African governments to invest more in key growth sectors and adopt domestic policies that reduce pressures driving up the cost of living.
