Top 5 Northern Nigeria Projects under President Tinubu

Since taking office, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has pushed a wave of development projects across Northern Nigeria.

From major highways to healthcare centres, these initiatives aim to boost the region’s economy, improve living standards, and bridge long-standing infrastructure gaps.

Here are the top 5 northern states in Nigeria projects under President Tinubu:

1. Building and Upgrading Major Highways

One of the most visible changes is on the region’s road network. The Abuja–Kaduna–Kano expressway has received extensive rehabilitation to ease traffic and improve safety on this vital north–south artery.

Sections of the Sokoto–Zamfara–Katsina route are also being widened and resurfaced, while work continues on the Sokoto–Badagry superhighway, which will eventually link the far northwest with the coast.

At the same time, dozens of feeder roads around towns like Zaria, Funtua, Gusau, Maiduguri and Lafia have been repaired or rebuilt, helping farmers move crops to market faster and more cheaply.

2. Reviving Irrigation and Boosting Agriculture

Agriculture remains the backbone of Northern Nigeria’s economy. To support farmers, the federal government launched the Agriculture Value Chain Programme, a $158 million fund covering nine northern states.

This initiative provides improved seeds, machinery and market access for staple crops. In Bauchi and Gombe, the Kolmani Integrated Development Project has restored water supply to thousands of hectares of farmland. Meanwhile, the World Bank‑supported ACReSAL project is fighting desertification across the semi‑arid belt.

Perhaps most symbolic is the revival of the Kano River Project, originally built decades ago, which now delivers a steady flow of irrigation water to farms that had long suffered drought.

3. Expanding Health Care Access

Health infrastructure in the North has received fresh attention. Federal funding has upgraded teaching hospitals in Zaria, Jos, Katsina, Sokoto, Ilorin, Bauchi and Yobe, equipping them with new wards, diagnostic machines and training for staff.

Beyond tertiary centres, over 1,000 primary health clinics are being renovated under the “Renewed Hope” agenda. When complete, these clinics will offer maternal care, vaccinations and basic treatments within a few kilometres of most rural homes.

4. Delivering More Power and Clean Energy

Reliable electricity is crucial for growth. The 614 km Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline will feed multiple power plants and factories across three states, and the new Gwagwalada Power Plant in the Federal Capital Territory is already online.

Recognising the need for off‑grid solutions, the government is also building a 50 MW solar station at the ABIBA site in Kaduna State, aiming to bring clean energy to nearby villages and reduce reliance on costly diesel generators.

Rail transport is also on the rise. The 203 km Kaduna–Kano rail line is under construction, promising fast, safe travel between two major cities.

Work has begun on another 285 km stretch from Kano to Maradi (in neighbouring Niger), which will boost cross-border trade.

In Kaduna city itself, a ₦100 billion fund has been approved for a light rail system, while the long-awaited Abuja Metro expansion is progressing, setting the stage for modern mass transit in the capital region.

6. Tackling Desertification and Erosion

Northern Nigeria faces serious environmental threats. The Tinubu administration has renewed its commitment to the Great Green Wall initiative, planting over a million trees to halt the Sahara’s southward advance.

To combat erosion and flooding, the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is constructing check dams, reshaping riverbanks and rehabilitating degraded land in states like Enugu, Plateau and Adamawa.
