Trump Fears Losing Office, Urges Republicans to Win in 2026

US President Donald Trump has warned Republicans that failing to win the 2026 congressional midterm elections could put his presidency at risk. Speaking to Republican lawmakers at a party retreat in Washington on Tuesday, Trump said a Democratic takeover of Congress would likely lead to efforts to remove him from office.

According to ABC News, Trump told the gathering that Republicans must stay united and win the midterms to protect his administration. He argued that if Democrats regain control of Congress, they would quickly move against him.

“You’ve got to win the midterms because, if we don’t win the midterms, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said. “I’ll get impeached.”

The president warned that losing control of Congress would not only threaten his position but also block his legislative plans. He said a Democratic-led House would launch investigations and stall key policies.

Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, a margin Trump described as fragile.

“You can’t be tough when you have a majority of three,” he said, referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s limited room to maneuver.

Trump used the retreat to urge party members to set aside internal disagreements and focus on winning over voters. He encouraged Republicans to campaign strongly on issues such as gender policy, healthcare, and election integrity, especially as many Americans struggle with the rising cost of living.

He also spoke briefly about inflation, blaming it on the previous Democratic administration. Trump said Republicans should highlight gains in the US stock market as evidence of economic progress under his leadership.

During his largely unscripted speech, which lasted more than an hour, Trump repeated several disputed claims and expressed frustration with voters’ behavior during midterm elections. He noted that presidents often see their party lose seats in Congress during midterms and said he did not understand why.

“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm,” Trump said. “I wish you could explain to me what the hell is going on with the mind of the public.”

The president also downplayed the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. His remarks came as Democrats marked the fifth anniversary of the riot and accused Republicans of trying to rewrite or soften the events of that day.

Trump predicted that Republicans would achieve what he called an “epic midterm victory” in 2026, though he complained that some party members were not fully supportive of his agenda.

He urged lawmakers to show flexibility on sensitive issues, including abortion policy, and mentioned the Hyde Amendment, which limits federal funding for abortion.

“All of these issues are very important issues, but you can own healthcare,” he told lawmakers. “Figure it out.”

Every seat in the House and one-third of the Senate will be up for election in November 2026. No sitting US president has avoided losing House seats in midterms since George W. Bush in 2006.

Trump was removed from office twice during his first term but cleared by the Senate both times. He again dismissed those actions, saying they were baseless.

Meanwhile, some House Democrats have already introduced measures seeking his removal in his second term, claims the White House strongly denies.

Trump has also pushed to expand executive authority on immigration, military actions, and regulation, moves that could soon face challenges in Congress and the Supreme Court.
