Donald Trump Signs Order to Stop Birthright Citizenship
President Donald Trump has signed an order to try to stop birthright citizenship. This rule has been a part of the U.S. Constitution for over 125 years and says that anyone born in the U.S. automatically becomes a citizen, no matter where their parents are from.
Trump made this decision as part of several actions he’s taking to change how the U.S. handles immigration and border security. These changes are expected to face many legal challenges.
In his speech when starting his term, Trump said, “As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is what I’m going to do.”
News sources like CBS News say that the U.S. has always understood the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to mean that all people born in the U.S. are citizens.
The amendment states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
Despite this, Trump wants to stop giving citizenship papers and passports to children born in the U.S. to parents who are not citizens, including those who are in the U.S. illegally or on temporary visas. This new rule is supposed to start in 30 days, but it doesn’t affect children who are already born.
Right after Trump announced this, groups like the American Civil Liberties Union started legal action against it.
Trump also claimed the power to change U.S. asylum laws, saying that migrants are causing an “invasion” at the southern border and posing a threat to public safety. He has given the order to stop these migrants from entering the U.S., pausing the normal asylum laws until he says the invasion has ended.
